Non-Functional Requirements

As an Architect the major influence on a design are the non-functional or architectural requirements. Most requirements documents I receive have great functional requirements but lack the non-functional. When I point this out the response if almost always “What are they?”. The best reference I have found so far that describes what they are is an article on the IBM Developer Works site on Capturing Architectural Requirements specifically the Appendix B that defines the different types of Architectural Requirements.
